Transport strategies and the role of technology in critical infrastructural situations is the theme that Iveco has addressed at TruckWay, an event organised by Italian daily newspaper La Repubblica in association with Somedia, a company of the L’Espresso publishing group that provides training in management and corporate culture.
Iveco, the official sponsor of TruckWay, showed how a commercial vehicle maker can make a contribution to mitigating the consequences of an inadequate transport infrastructure, both in Italy and further afield.
Sergio Perini, Iveco’s General Manager for the Italian market, explained the four strategies that the company has adopted to respond to the most pressing problems: low environmental impact vehicles to reduce the consequences of a congested infrastructure; better use of the existing infrastructure through technologies applied to the vehicle to make it more acceptable; telematic applications to optimise routes and usage methods by reducing pressure on the infrastructure via better management of loads, vehicles and fleets; and technologies for active and passive safety.
One of the current “gaps” is due to the physical and functional structure of the city and how the commercial chain by which products reach the end consumer is organised. An example of how technology can help overcome these issues is the prototype vehicle created by Iveco for the FIDEUS project (a research programme promoted by the European Union) and presented at the Hannover show in 2006. Powered by compressed natural gas, the vehicle offers ultra-low emission levels and noise level reduction taken almost to extremes—engine noise, tyre rumble, even the door opening and closing mechanisms—to tackle areas that are particularly sensitive in urban working situations.
