Ecology and economy are the Iveco well defined benchmarks for the achievement of a more sustainable mobility and for improving the productivity of the transport industry.
This emerged from the keynote speech given by Franco Miniero, Iveco’s Senior Vice President Sales and Marketing, yesterday in Rotterdam, at the Annual Conference of the ECG (the Association of European Finished Vehicle Logistics), on "Automotive Logistics - Between Scrapping Bonuses and Uncertain Future - The Challenge Ahead."
In his speech Miniero pointed out how Iveco works to supply vehicles that offer customers very low emissions, also tangible benefits in terms of lower operating costs and efficiency of transport. It was pointed out that in terms of ecology, Iveco has an excellent market position, offering a wide range of vehicles powered by alternative fuels and alternative drive trains, such as natural gas, full electric and Diesel-electric hybrid propulsion.
Miniero also stressed that the achievement of the Euro VI standard requires huge investments, but needing a common European strategy to encourage fleet renewal as more targeted initiative to improve air quality.
Still on the subject of ecology and respect for the environment, Iveco has contributed to the Fiat Group objectives, with a product range that meets the highest standards in terms of pollutant emissions, introduced in advance of the mandatory deadlines, and many other initiatives for environmentally-friendly and safer vehicles, in support of Fiat Group's access to the prestigious Dow Jones Sustainability World stock indices (DJSI) and Dow Jones STOXX Sustainability which are allowed only to companies considered to manage their business according to sustainability criteria.
Miniero then concluded his speech by talking about projects to improve the efficiency and operations of transport, such as "Project Diciotto", an important pilot programme, sponsored by Anfia, regarding increased lengths of articulated vehicle combinations up to 18 metres to evaluate a new transport solution capable of reducing the level of congestion on roads and therefore consumption and emissions of CO2.
To move towards a truly sustainable future mobility it is necessary to resolve the problem of the inevitable increase in vehicle weight of future vehicles due to tanks for gaseous fuels (mainly methane) and batteries for electric and hybrid vehicles. In this regard, Miniero indicated the need for legislative action to allow for the weight of gaseous fuel tanks and traction batteries to be excluded from the maximum permitted vehicle weight so not to compromise the vehicle payload.
