Interest in renewable diesel as a commercial vehicle fuel is growing, as governments and private companies look to low carbon fuel options - as a leader in alternative fuels and propulsion systems, IVECO now offers renewable diesel compatibility across all ranges, and on almost all models, with complete warranty support.

Also known as Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), renewable diesel is made up of waste sources such as vegetable oils and animal fats that are then hydrotreated, a process that uses hydrogens and catalysts at high temperatures and pressures.

With similar chemical properties to traditional diesel, HVO can be used as a 100 per cent replacement in compatible engines. The benefits include near zero CO2 emissions and greatly reduced methane and NOx, making it an attractive interim solution between traditional fuels and zero emission technologies.

IVECO's medium and heavy-duty truck engines have been HVO-compatible for several years, and more recently the Daily Van and Cab Chassis line-up equipped with the popular FIC 3.0 litre 180EVID engine has transitioned to also be suitable for HVO use.

IVECO Trucks Australia, Head of Product and Customer Innovation Centre, Andrew Winbanks, said IVECO's wider compatibility with HVO was positive news for fleet owners.

'The use of HVO in compatible IVECO vehicles will not negatively impact engine life, service intervals, durability or performance; nor will the fuel affect after treatment systems, and warranties remain unchanged,' Andrew explained.

'While availability of HVO is currently limited and predominantly accessed through bulk commercial arrangements, leading industry players such as Viva Energy are looking to increase supply through additional importation and more local processing.'
