Expansion Module / Can open interface for Stralis, X-WAY, Trakker and Performer

It often happens that vehicle devices or parts of bodybuilder fittings interact (power, signals, data) with the vehicle's electronic system. The interaction happens through one or more connectors. The typology of interaction depends of the number of equipments managed, their task, the quality and the quantity of information exchanged.

For the simplest applications it is sufficient to adopt a series of connectors from which it is possible to get basic information (Engine on / off; engine in running condition or stopped; handbrake engaged or disengaged; …).

For more complex fittings (Power Take-Offs, firefighting or crane equipments) multiple connectors and programmable control units are implemented. These advanced interface systems not only activate or disactivate one or more devices, but also protect them from bad operating conditions.

The main purpose of this article is to inform about the complete offer of connections and explain all the potential applications on IVECO vehicles, minimizing the bodybuilder effort.

  • Expansion module (option code 4572)
  • The Expansion Module (EM) control unit offers an electrical management of the PTO(s) and supports special applications.
  • In addition it provides electric signals such as:
    • Vehicle standstill, engine status, parking and service brake, clutch depressed, gearbox neutral and reverse, etc.
    • External engine control like engine speed request, vehicle speed limit, engine start and engine stop, remote emergency light activation
    • Connection of side marker, position and parking lights
  • The EM control units located in the cab (passenger's side control compartment).
  • CANopen interface (option code 384)
  • Instead of using the hardwired interface, the CANopen interface offers a high variety of signals and access to vehicle.
  • The CAN communication can be flexible configured, so beside the default setting various communication pre-sets can be downloaded at CustomerService. Also specific CAN communication can be realized, either by BB directly using CANopen tools or by IVECO upon specific request.
  • Certain access to vehicle are under a CAN Firewall control, permitting access only in certain well defined conditions. The monitored CAN access to vehicle are:
    • Engine start, engine stop and engine starter lockout
    • Request engine rpm
    • Rpm upper limit, rpm lower limit and engine torque limit
    • Vehicle speed limit
    • ASC2 request msg (ECAS Remote Control)
    • TSC1 request msg (Engine Remote Control)
    • TC1 request msg (Gearbox Remote Control)
  • The CAN Firewall monitors continuously:
    • Various status information of brakes and powertrain
    • State of the speed of the vehicle
    • BB active input
  • Also CAN firewall can be individually customized – choosing Easy2use customized pre-sets.
  • Key Benefits:
    • Sophisticated number of information and controls
    • Flexible CAN interface setup by using available pre-sets
On demand also a fully customized CAN interface setup can be offered
    • Due to CAN Firewall clear definition of the security aspects individual CAN Firewall adaption to application specific needs available
    • Expandable

Interface Typologies for all Customer Needs

Type Opt code What is it? What does it do? Availability
Bodybuilder connection Std SIMPLE INTERFACE to connect vehicle and body.
There are 2 standard connectors, ST14A (21PIN) and ST14B (9 PIN)
It allows to connect the body to the vehicle electical system to manage one or more PTOs and other applications Standard on all rigid vehicles
Bodybuilders (BB) connector 4572 ECU in a specific box inside cab in front of passenger seat. It's an interface between vehicle and specific systems connected to it (i.e. PTOs) One-way communication (from vehicle to body): it allows to manage the mean signals from the vehicle (engine-drive-braking system): mean funtions:
1. Possibility to connect and manage until 3 PTOs. The mean parameters which can be configured are: engine control (i.e. rpms and torque), PTOs engagement and disengagement limitions and conditions
2. Management of adding lights on front/rear sides and on roof (it's also possible to manage the flashing types in function of other parameters, like the vehicle speed)
Standard on Trakker rigid, optional on Stralis Trakker Tractor head, X-WAY and Performer
Can Open interface 384 ELECTRONIC ECU which allows to configur the Expansion Module with adding functionalities compared to the standard ones Two-way communicationI (from vehicle to body and viceversa):it allows to connect the body to the vehicle CAN line by a dedicate ECU, with opened two-way communication (between vehicle and body) of all signals on CAN line (in addition to those foreseen as standard on the Expansion Module). Available as option on all Heavy range
(*) PTO is necessary for application of cranes, aerial platforms, tippers, garbage collection systems, pumps

Functional Scheme

Standard Protocols: communication standard settings between the 2 ECUs (vehicle and body), already foreseen with Can Open Interface ( CCP 384).
In particular the more common signals are gave available (i.e. neutral gear inserting request, liquids of body level and pressure)
Public Protocols: communication pre-defined settings, developed by Iveco, between the 2 ECUs (vehicle and body), for the following applications:
RSU
Cranes/aerial platforms
Concrete mixer
Gulley cleaning trucks
Privat Protocols: customizable communication settings between the 2 ECUs (vehicle and body), for specific needs(i.e. tender)

Expansion Module Default Configuration can be modified in order to meet Body Builder’s needs also through the Customer Service Tool (E.A.SY).
