Madrid, 16 June 2016Iveco launches the New Stralis, which introduces a completely new driveline and, with the best reliability and efficiency, delivers leading edge TCO and CO2 reduction. The three-vehicle range was developed around customer missions and meets all the requirements of the on-road heavy transportation sector.
The New Stralis is the result of an important investment in product development, testing and production facilities and methods. The New Stralis will fully benefit from the high quality manufacturing technologies and processes at the Madrid plant, which is dedicated to this range, and the Valladolid facility (Spain) that produces and supplies its cabs. Both plants have been completely renewed and reorganised to ensure that they operate at the highest levels of World Class Manufacturing.
New Stralis: three TCO2 Champions
The New Stralis has been designed to offer the best solution for regional and short-range missions, including transport of hazardous goods, where it maintains the unique advantage given by the exclusive HI-SCR after-treatment system.
A specific version, the New Stralis XP, was developed for the demands of the international long-haul transport business, and is packed with innovative fuel-saving features and new services to maximize uptime and fuel efficiency.
The revolutionary New Stralis NP, which runs on CNG and LNG, is the most sustainable international transport truck ever and a real breakthrough in the gas truck industry. It is the only natural gas truck to offer the power rating, comfort, transmission technology and fuel autonomy to suit long-distance haulage missions.
Pierre Lahutte, Iveco Brand President, commented: "The New Stralis has been designed to lower the TCO and CO2 of transporters as well providing the very best reliability to its owners. The long-range freight hauling business will drive the whole commercial vehicle market in the years to come: Stralis has all that is needed to lead such a completely reshaped market with the TCO2 Champion Stralis XP, a truck at the leading edge of technology, and the game changer Stralis NP, the first and only gas truck that has demonstrated it can be used in long-haul missions. We are about to open new frontiers in sustainable transport, and we will make it in partnership with our customers."
A new, unique mission-driven approach: product and TCO-reducing services
On the product, Iveco has renewed and upgraded all the main technical sub-systems: the New Stralis features a completely redesigned driveline, a new electrical and electronic architecture, the new best-in- class transmission, rear axle and a rear suspension, and introduces the latest-generation GPS predictive functions and new features to enhance fuel economy and sustainability. In addition, Iveco has developed a new generation of services aimed at reducing the TCO of each model, which represent an exclusive and distinctive element of the New Stralis offer.
New Stralis – TCO Champion: Technology to the core
The developments on the New Stralis focus on energy management to achieve the significant reduction in TCO in every mission and every type of route.
The new engines have been re-engineered to reduce friction and a new anti-idling function automatically turns off the engine after a pre-set period of time when the vehicle is parked, improving the use of energy.
The Smart Auxiliaries on the New Stralis 480XP and 570XP prevent energy losses when they are not in use: they include the clutch compressor and air processing unit, energy-recovery alternator with intelligent battery monitoring and a variable-flow steering pump.
The Smart EGR system featured on the New Stralis 480XP and 570XP is an innovative solution that works in combination with Iveco's patented HI-SCR after-treatment system to optimise combustion, bringing a significant fuel-saving benefit on long-haul routes. It harnesses a small amount of exhaust gas re-circulation (just 8%) to allow an earlier start of injection, reducing fuel consumption while the high 97% tailpipe NOx conversion, which is ensured by the HI-SCR system, is maintained. This revolutionary smart solution has all the advantages of the HI-SCR-only system: no impact on radiator size, no extra maintenance, no weight increase, no parked regeneration and the longest service intervals, resulting in a further reduction in fuel and TCO. With this solution, Iveco and its engine development partner FPT Industrial once again prove their long-established leadership in fuel efficiency technology.
The Hi-Cruise GPS predictive driving system, based on state-of-the-art mapping technology, compares geo-localisation with road topography and accordingly adopts predictive strategies in acceleration, deceleration and gear shifting. This feature simplifies the driver's job, allowing them to focus on safety instead of road routine, and enhances their comfort with a smooth drive. In addition, it delivers substantial fuel savings also with low-skilled driver.
The new triple "A" eco-tyres developed by Michelin minimise rolling resistance, achieving significant fuel savings up to 1.5% on average during first life. This results in an environmental benefit of 1.33 kg less CO2 every 100 km, which adds up to over 3.7 tonnes during the vehicle's first life. These savings are achieved while maintaining the same grip, robustness and durability.
The all-new rear axle with single reduction improves gear geometry, friction and optimises fuel consumption.
These new features result in a double-digit improvement in fuel efficiency compared to the previous model.
In addition new technologies, features and services have been added to reduce TCO even further.
The new-generation, 12-speed HI-TRONIX automated transmission, developed in collaboration with ZF, is at the forefront of technological advancement in its category and dramatically improves durability and reduces costs. The HI-TRONIX reduces shifting time by 10%, it is designed for almost twice the gearshifts of the previous generation, it can improve durability by up to 1.6 million kilometers, and it abates acoustic emissions by 6db – ideal for quiet night missions – all this while providing best-in-class torque-to-mass ratio, ratio spread and efficiency. In addition, its modular, service-friendly design reduces maintenance and simplifies repairs, with consequent savings. It also offers additional functionalities, such as manoeuvring mode (creep) for low-speed operation, working like a torque-converter transmission, rocking function to recover grip on low-adherence surfaces, 4 reverse gears and a new range of PTOs.
The rear suspension has been completely redesigned to make it more mass-efficient and durable, resulting in a lighter suspension while maintaining performance; this translates into 45 kilograms more payload. Higher resistance to corrosion, achieved with surface treatment of all key metallic components, contributes to lower maintenance costs.
The new electric and electronic architecture adopted on New Stralis and New Stralis XP represents a technological breakthrough, and an enabler of further innovation. Based on the MUX concept, it sees on - board electronic units communicate through two physical wires using a common protocol.
The new HI-MUX - the Stralis evolution of this concept - has been implemented through the re-design the whole distribution layout and some of its components. Its architecture is modular, split into two for improved flexibility and serviceability and integrated in a new layout with pneumatic, fuel and AdBlue ducts. HI-MUX allows the development of a detailed design solution for any specific truck configuration, while reducing the number of components and their assembling complexity.
The outstanding reliability and durability of the New Stralis also results in lower Maintenance and Repairs costs: 5% less than a current model with a standard 3-year contract and 8% with a 4-year one, improving on a cost that was already very competitive and cutting further overall TCO.
New Stralis CO2 Champion: sustainability and performance in transport
A wide and well-balanced range of engines to suit all applications
The New Stralis features Iveco Cursor 6-cylinder engines equipped with new mission-specific fuel-saving solutions. The wide range of engines for the New Stralis includes 3 displacements, with the Cursor 9 at 8.7 litres, Cursor 11 at 11.1 litres and Cursor 13 at 12.9 litres, and 9 power ratings ranging from 310 to 570 hp, all providing class-leading power and torque density.
The new Stralis' environmental performance has been improved further through the engines' greater efficiency and a boost in performance on some models: maximum torque on the Cursor 11 has been raised by 100 Nm on the 420 hp engine and by 50 Nm on the 480 hp, while maximum power on the Cursor 13 reaches 510 and 570 hp.
HI-SCR: Iveco's signature technology
The New Stralis features the patented HI-SCR, the best selective catalytic reduction system on the market and the only one that achieves a 97% NOx-abatement level, meeting Euro VI standards without EGR. In its Euro VI/C version, HI-SCR also detects in real time any variance in the emission level through new AdBlue sensors that provide continuous, accurate emission management.
With HI-SCR there is no active regeneration and exhaust temperature is lower: this makes the New Stralis the ideal truck for working in restricted areas such as airports, ships, tunnels, refineries and fuel loading bays, as well as for dangerous goods transport missions.
HI-SCR is a compact, lightweight technology that offers the best combination of efficiency and service life. It also has the longest maintenance intervals on the market, maximising uptime, and delivers excellent fuel efficiency. It all adds up to the exceptionally low TCO and outstanding sustainability of the New Stralis, the TCO2 champion.
