Leipzig, 20th February, 2025
IVECO has delivered two IVECO S-eWay Fuel Cell heavy-duty trucks to BMW today, a partner in H2Haul project.
This European project, co-financed by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, aims to demonstrate the high reliability
of hydrogen-powered trucks as a viable zero-emission solution for Europe’s transportation needs through fieldoperational
tests in multiple real-world missions, in collaboration with various hydrogen providers and across
diverse geographical ecosystems.
This milestone underscores IVECO's commitment to advancing sustainable mobility and shaping the future of
zero-emission logistics in Europe.
The handover took place during a special event hosted by BMW in Leipzig, which provided insight into the holistic
use of hydrogen throughout the BMW value chain, from logistics to the finished vehicle for long-haul trucking. This
significant occasion also marked the opening of two state-of-the-art hydrogen filling stations by TEAL Mobility in
Leipzig and Hormersdorf, a key step in the establishment of the necessary infrastructure for H2 logistics and
commercial transport.
Giandomenico Fioretti, Head of Alternative Propulsion Business Development stated: "The delivery of our
first two S-eWay Fuel Cell trucks to BMW represents a significant step forward in proving the practicality and
scalability of hydrogen-powered long-haulage transport. Through our active participation in the H2Haul project,
we are proud to help pave the way for a zero-emission future in Europe’s transport sector. This achievement
demonstrates the strength of collaboration between vehicle manufacturers, energy and technology providers,
shippers, carriers, and institutions in advancing the hydrogen-based commercial transport."
The IVECO S-eWay Fuel Cell boasts a range of up to 800 km, a fast-refuelling time of under 20 minutes, and
can accommodate 70 kg of compressed H2 at 700-bar pressure. Thanks to its high mileage and payload capacity,
it is expected to be a real game changer in zero tailpipe emissions long-haulage missions. The trucks will transport
parts between Bavaria (Nuremberg) and Leipzig (BMW plant), supported by two new hydrogen refuelling stations.
IVECO’s participation in the H2Haul project is part of its multi-energy approach to decarbonization, focusing on
the development of various alternative powertrains to provide customers with the solution that best meets their
specific operational needs, with hydrogen representing a key element in decarbonizing hard to abate missions.
While monitoring the progress of the technological landscape and the evolution of the regulatory framework, the
brand continues contributing to the development of the hydrogen ecosystem for heavy-duty applications by
investigating all promising technologies and vehicle architectures, such as the IVECO S-Way prototype featuring
a FPT Industrial XCURSOR 13-litre Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine and the series-hybrid heavy-duty
concept truck featuring a FPT Industrial CURSOR 9 Hydrogen range-extending system, both of which were
presented at IAA 2024.
Driving sustainable innovation in Europe: a showcase of Hydrogen excellence
The two IVECO S-eWay Fuel Cell trucks delivered today are part of the fleet of 12 hydrogen-fuelled heavy-duty
vehicles which IVECO is deploying across strategic sites across Europe (Germany, France and Switzerland) as
part of the H2Haul project to demonstrate the future viability of hydrogen fuel-cell trucks. One of the trucks was
displayed at the new TEAL Mobility hydrogen station, where it demonstrated hydrogen refuelling operations, while
the second was showcased at BMW’s Leipzig plant.
The event, hosted by BMW, brought together representatives from project partners, funding institutions, and
government officials, including delegates from the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport. It began with
presentations on BMW's holistic hydrogen framework showcasing how hydrogen is being integrated across the
company’s value chain, from production to long-haul transport, followed by in-depth insights into the project and
its pivotal role in accelerating the scalability of hydrogen-powered vehicles in the future of transport. Following this, guests were invited to attend the opening ceremony of the TEAL Mobility hydrogen station, located close to
BMW’s Leipzig plant, where one IVECO S-eWay Fuel Cell demonstrated a hydrogen refuelling operation.
An IVECO BUS E-WAY, already operated within BMW premises for zero-emission shuttle service, was used to
transport attendants between the BMW plant and the new station.
This comprehensive demonstration of hydrogen technology highlights the collective commitment of industry
leaders to decarbonizing logistics and accelerating the adoption of hydrogen-powered mobility for long-haulage
and demanding missions, representing a significant milestone in the journey toward the decarbonization of the
industry.
