The future of Iveco in terms of sustainability and development
Iveco organised an international press conference to discuss the future of the company, its broad product offering and to take stock of the overall market and the world of transport. Particular attention was devoted by the CEO, Paolo Monferino, to the detail of Iveco's 2010-2014 strategic plan, previously announced at the Fiat Group Investor Day earlier this year on 21st April.
Iveco's five-year plan provides for the progressive achievement of "Double-Digit" profitability, with a market of commercial vehicles in Europe foreseen to return to "normal" levels by 2014, and is based on four fundamental pillars :
• renewal of the European range of produce, with a substantial industrial efficiency by leveraging optimisation of the WCM (World Class Manufacturing) programme;
• development of activities in Latin America, particularly Brazil, with the expansion of the distribution and service network and the product range;
• reorganisation of the bus business unit along with the development of the special vehicles business;
• utilisation of the excellent positioning of the company in China, with the consolidation of its local market presence and with the offer of Chinese products, or Chinese-based platforms, to some traditional markets, particularly in Africa, South America and the Middle East.
This meeting also provided an opportunity to focus on Iveco’s technological innovation in a session specifically devoted to the wide range of alternative traction products.
E3 = ENERGY EFFICIENCY ECOLOGY, expressed as a formula, this second part of the event showed Iveco's commitment to future sustainable mobility. A commitment that Iveco is pursuing with determination, creating advanced technological innovations.
This was precisely the theme of the event, in which, after careful review of the issues relating to sustainable mobility and the various possible solutions on the issue of alternative traction and renewable fuels, tested under real traffic conditions, vehicles that offer technological solutions specific to the different types of mission to which they are intended. Daily, Eurocargo, Stralis and buses with alternative power trains (electric, Diesel electric hybrid and natural gas) that have been extensively tested in urban and suburban conditions.
Iveco is convinced that it is necessary to combine the various requirements of sustainable transport with the profitability of business customers. There is indeed no one alternative solution that can be applied to all missions and to meeting all market demands. Indeed, the ECODaily Electric is suitable for urban use only, while those with Diesel electric hybrid power trains and natural gas engines can also be used for medium-distance transport.
The company is moving in two directions:
• continuous improvement in the efficiency of Diesel engines and the introduction of new European emissions regulations in advance of their entry into force;
• the creation of vehicles that use different types of alternative traction such as natural gas, pure electric or Diesel electric hybrid vehicles adapted to specific transport needs.
A strategy in favour with customers, as evidenced by the 55 000 ECODaily orders received in one year since the launch of this new model, with renewed aesthetics and engines, as well as improved in comfort and on-board electronics and has made the synthesis between ecology and economy as its trade mark; on top of total sales of over two million units since its creation.
Iveco is confirmed as the only manufacturer of commercial vehicles able to offer a whole range of alternative traction systems, from the ECODaily Electric to the Eurocargo hybrid and the Stralis CNG (Natural Power), with responses from the market justifying this choice.
Not only that, projections say that more than one third of total sales of Iveco medium and heavy commercial vehicles in Western Europe in 2010 will be voluntary EEV-compliant Enhanced Environmentally Friendly Vehicle, the most stringent European emissions standard available.
Iveco once again demonstrates itself to be ahead of its time in the offer of transport solutions across the board with a range of products and services for every need.
