Iveco recently presented in its new heavy range of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Stralis. It completes the Iveco CNG vehicles offer, which meets transport needs on a full-range basis: Daily range (3.5-6.5 ton), Eurocargo range (12-16 ton), and Stralis range (18-26 ton), with power ranging from 106 to 272 CV.
The CNG Stralis vehicles are equipped with the Cursor 8 CNG engine, with a 7.8 litre displacement. Iveco CNG engines’ environmental performance exceeds limits of the European EEV (Environmentally Enhanced Vehicle) standard included in Directive 2005/55/EC.
This engine powers over 3,500 CNG urban buses around the world and over 1,000 garbage collection trucks on duty in France, Italy, Spain and shortly in Portugal. The Madrid waste management agency FCC will soon adopt the Stralis CNG to increase its fleet, which is expected to total 675 CNG trucks.
CNG Stralis: main features
The Stralis CNG range covers applications from 18 to 26 ton with configurations of two and three axles, 4x2 and 6x2x4, the latter having a trailing positively steered axle with pneumatic suspension. It is ideal for urban missions and is equipped with the new automatic Allison 3200 gearbox with a hydraulic torque converter and 6 speeds and includes an integrated primary auxiliary brake.
Cursor 8 CNG technology
The Cursor 8 CNG engine operates according to the Otto cycle, has 6 cylinders and 24 valves driven by an overhead camshaft. Ultra low tail pipe emissions are achieved due to the stoichiometric combustion system and multi-point electronic injection with 12 gas injectors in two-by-two format at the entrance to the inlet tract of each cylinder. The close loop combustion control system ensures the stoichiometric combustion process adapts to any variations in natural gases composition. The exhaust has a three-way platinum and palladium catalyst with lambda sensor, to reduce the concentration of CO, HC and NOx to extremely low levels.
