The Vatican City Fire Service has taken delivery of a new Iveco Daily fire-fighting appliance built by Iveco Magirus, which supplies specialist vehicles to fire brigades worldwide.
It was delivered to Pope Benedict XVI in the Vatican by Iveco Managing Director Paolo Monferino, and joins a fleet of vehicles operated by the Vatican’s Civil Protection service.
This Daily is fitted with Falcon 1000 bodywork and is the first of a new model designed specifically for operation on narrow streets and in areas with restricted access. Featuring a comprehensive array of modern fire-fighting equipment and capable of carrying a crew of six, its compact size and excellent manoeuvrability will enable the vehicle to make swift progress in an emergency.
The Vatican City is situated entirely within the city of Rome and is separated from the rest of the city by a wall. It comprises St Peter’s Church, St Peter’s Square, the Vatican and the Vatican Gardens and is particularly famous for its magnificent St Peter’s Basilica. Near St Peter’s stands the Vatican Palace, the Pope’s residence. Among the principal features of the Palace are the Stanze, the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museum, containing major works of art and valuable pictures.
