Bed manufacturer Myers Beds has replaced three of its trucks with new Iveco Stralis drawbar units, marking the first delivery of ‘large cab’ vehicles into a fleet which is comprised almost entirely of Cargos from the Iveco family.
The Cambridgeshire-based company placed the order based on its existing relationship with Iveco distributor TC Harrison, which currently supplies over 90 per cent of the company’s 33-strong commercial vehicle fleet.
“Each of our trucks cover up to 80,000 km a year, so it was a natural progression to look at the Stralis,” explains Grant Clay, Factory Manager at Myers Beds. “Our existing Iveco fleet serves us very well, but the larger vehicles bring additional advantages such as enhanced driver comfort and improved fuel economy.
“The three drivers selected for the new vehicles have been exceptionally impressed, not just with the larger Active Time cabs but also with the smoothness of the EuroTronic gearboxes,” he adds. “These factors will serve to reduce wear and tear on not only the drivers, but also vehicle components.”
The Stralis 190S27/P’s are fitted with Abel demountable drawbar bodies, built by Hutchinson’s of Peterborough, and capable of transporting 28 complete bed sets per container. Operating out of Myers Beds’ 300,000 ft² manufacturing facility in Huntingdon, the vehicles will deliver to retail outlets nationwide, and are expected to remain on the fleet for between eight and ten years.
Power is provided by Iveco’s 7.8 litre Cursor 8 engine, which produces up to 273 hp between 1,720 and 2,400 rev/min and 1,115 Nm of torque between 1,000 and 1,720 rev/min.
London deliveries with Daily
Myers Beds has also replaced its smallest delivery vehicle, a Renault Master panel van, with an Iveco Daily 35C13 chassis cab, fitted with a spacious 16.5 ft Luton box body.
With a payload of exactly one tonne, this vehicle has been designed to make deliveries to stores in central London, and for more personal deliveries to hotels and large private customers.
Complete with an aluminium sectional floor, to reduce the vehicle’s overall weight, the Daily is able to carry up to 14 complete bed sets.
All four vehicles are fitted with personalised registration plates, ending in the letters BED, and will be serviced and maintained by TC Harrison.
